Fitness & Difficulty
A challenging tour with iconic but demanding climbs. The Tremola's cobblestones add resistance and require a steady, controlled effort, while the Oberalp and Lukmanier deliver long, sustained ascents. Expect 1,500–2,400 m of climbing on the main days. Train with longer climbs and, if possible, some riding on rougher surfaces to prepare your hands and pacing for the cobbles.
Best Season to Ride
The Gotthard and its neighbouring Oberalp and Lukmanier passes are usually open from June to October. Sitting on the sunny southern side of the Alps, Airolo enjoys a milder Ticino climate and the passes here often open a little earlier than the highest Valais routes. Midsummer offers the best chance to ride the historic cobbled Tremola in dry conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Gotthard cobbles hard to ride on a road bike?
The Tremola's cobbles are rideable on a standard road bike but slower and more tiring than tarmac. Slightly wider tyres (28 mm) and a relaxed grip make a big difference, and there is a parallel modern road if you prefer smooth tarmac on the day.
Can I combine the Gotthard with other passes?
Yes. Airolo is a perfect base to link the Gotthard with the Oberalp, Lukmanier and Nufenen, and it pairs naturally with the Goms tour just over the Nufenen Pass.
What's the best thing to eat in Airolo after a ride?
Airolo's Ticino location means excellent Italian-Swiss food — fresh pasta, polenta and local cured meats — perfect for refuelling after the Tremola. I'll point you to my favourite local spots.
